Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Alysia Reiner (Orange Is The New Black) go head to head in this brilliant and biting comedy about friendship, feminism and fertility. An entertaining and thought-provoking watch, just in time for Mother’s Day!

Over the course of one memorable evening, two very different couples and a surrogate must face some raw truths and sometimes heartbreaking shortcomings, in this acclaimed comedy that packs an emotional punch, that The Hollywood Reporter says “explodes cliches about motherhood, marriage and career.”

The film features standout performances from Christina Hendricks and Alysia Reiner as old friends who clash as they realise they are approaching motherhood in extremely different ways – one traditional, one unconventional. They are given sterling support from David Alan Basche (United 93) and Gbenga Akinnagbe (The Deuce) as beleaguered husbands, and a brilliant turn from Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect) as the surrogate who throws everything into disarray.

With a caustic, cringe-inducing and occasionally cruel script by Risa Mickenberg, about the personal, social, professional, and ideological implications of bringing new life into the world, Motherhood is directed with acerbic assurance by Marianna Palka, who won the New Director’s award at the Edinburgh Film Festival for her spiky comedy romance Good Dick in 2008.

Smartly funny, taking well aimed potshots at liberalism, class, consumer fads, and the patriarchy along the way, Motherhood is a cutting comedy of manners, and a wonderfully awkward, sometimes poignant, look at the trials and tribulations of 21st-century adulthood.
