“Uplifting & joyous” (LA Times)
Winner of the Audience Award for Best documentary at the 2015 Washington Film Festival, TAP WORLD transports us around the globe in a celebration of one of the most embracing of dance forms. Places like India where Pandit Chitresh Das demonstrates his mastery of the classical barefoot form of kathak, To France and the Eiffel Tower to watch French high-speed tap-dancer Arthur Benhamou, then to Campinas, Brazil, where Luyz Baldijao gives lessons to impoverished kids who learn to count while dancing. Of course, we’re never far from the homeland of tap, the US, and the stars of the current generation of ‘rhythm tappers’ bedazzle us with their skills – like much revered Brooklyn-based Michelle Dorrance and Evan ‘peg-leg’ Ruggiero, who had a leg amputated to bone cancer. Ruggierio typifies the enduring spirit of the film – that through the joy of tap-dancing anything is possible.
Director Dean Hargrove reflected: “We wanted to show how this uniquely American art form has been given an exciting resurgence through the global embrace of dancers and audiences around the world. We reached out to dancers, choreographers and dance companies from across the globe to participate and this is the result.”
