The Very Best of UK Film: London to Brighton

Each Friday I will be uploading a new article to frompage2screen.com and in each article, I will go through one at a time, my favourite UK films. They are in no specific order and some of you might have seen the film I choose, but then again, you might not. They all come highly recommended from myself. I will try to give you some trivia on the film, a little background on the filmmakers and share some images and trailers from the film in question. I hope you enjoy.

Easily one of the most powerful films around in the UK market, and along with such films as Ill Manors, and Eden Lake. London to Brighton is a tough film to watch but a masterpiece.

I first discovered the film when it hits DVD, and one day I walked into a retail store, saw the cover art, read the box description and bought it.Never regretting it.

After watching the film and being very disturbed by its subject matter, the DVD stayed on my shelf for a couple of years until I decided to revisit the film. Since then London to Brighton is most definitely one of the films that I highly recommend anytime someone comments that they havent seen that many UK films. Earlier last year I sat down with film maker Kemal Yildirim to record a podcast about the true story film ‘Rose’ that he had directed and mentioned to him that I felt the film sits in the same category as London to Brighton. Kemals eyes lit up as he had looked at London to Brighton years earlier as a sort of inspiration for ‘Rose”s style.

I couldn’t state just how amazing London to Brighton is without going into the three main cast members and how their acting talents but also the chemistry they share on screen is a massive ingredient to the films perfection. I hadn’t seen Lorraine Stanley, Georgia Groome, or Johnny Harris on screen before London to Brighton but since first watching the film, I have tried to keep up with the roles they progress onto, however will I see anything as wonderful as their performances in London to Brighton? That doesnt mean their performances arent as great now as they were then, its just that for me there’s always going to be something special about seeing these three together, in this film that will always be held in such high regard. Its not often you see perfect chemistry in an entire cast, but when you do see it. You know it.  But I do know that every film that features each of the cast of London to Brighton, it still delivers great performances. Keep an eye on those three talented souls

Its not an easy film to watch although as with the other films that Paul Andrew Williams has created, even when we see violence or abuse, its perfectly handled and not at all used in a gratuitous way. But with a sensitivity to the characters, who might be made up but who are all extremely realistic people going through situations that actually happen in the everyday world.

I tend to watch London to Brighton at least once a year, and have sat down with friends and shown them the film. They start of as I did.Nervous about what we might see in this feature film. But by the end of it, they thank me and now have the film in their lives too.

London to Brighton has to be the film to kick off this weekly series of UK films. It might not have been the first UK film that I ever saw, but it holds a special place in my heart and hopefully yours too when you watch it.

Its also worth adding that on the DVD of London to Brighton, you can see the short film “Royalty” that became the foundation for London to Brighton (and which also features Johnny Harris and Lorraine Stanley). You can also see Georgia Groomes audition recording which has to be seen to be believed. Watch the first take and she doesnt quiet hit the mark, but she restarts herself on the second take and as they say “knocks it right out of the park” Pure talent.

So check out London to Brighton.
